Statement from Latinos for a Fair Judiciary on Nomination of Bradley Garcia, first Latino named to DC Circuit Court

Washington, DC — Latinos for a Fair Judiciary (LFJ) congratulates Bradley Garcia — an experienced appellate lawyer and former law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan —  for his nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Notably, if confirmed, Garcia would be the first Latino to sit on one of the nation’s most influential appellate courts.

In response to today’s historic nomination, Andrea Nill Sanchez, Executive Director of Latinos for a Fair Judiciary, provided the following statement:

“We commend President Biden for nominating Bradley Garcia to the D.C. Circuit. The presence of a Latino jurist on the D.C. Circuit is long overdue. We are the nation’s second largest racial group and drove half of the country’s growth in the last decade, yet Latinos have never been represented on this prominent federal circuit court. We look forward to learning more about Mr. Garcia’s record and how his professional and personal experience could incorporate Latino concerns and perspectives into the D.C. Circuit’s decision making.”

“Mr. Garcia’s nomination comes just as recent events have underscored the outsize impact federal court decisions have on Latino communities. From endangering equal access to safe and legal abortions, to maintaining the unjust explusions of asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border, and overturning gun control measures that could’ve prevented the tragic massacre at Uvalde— major judicial decisions consistently fail to consider, let alone incorporate, the perspectives and concerns of Latino communities who disproportionately bear the brunt of their legal aftermath.”

“That’s why Latinos for a Fair Judiciary and our partners will continue to urge the White House and Senators to accelerate the nomination and confirmation of qualified Latinos and those with diverse professional backgrounds so our federal court system reflects our nation’s demographic reality and the legal outcomes that should come with it.”
