Statement from Latinos for a Fair Judiciary on historic ruling to end Roe v. Wade

Washington, DC — In response to today’s decision from the Supreme Court, Latinos for a Fair Judiciary (LFJ) strongly condemns the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and break other precedents that have protected safe abortion access for millions of womenacross the country for decades. This decision, led by the six conservative justices, will disproportionately affect Latinas by immediately making abortion illegal in at least 13 states, including Texas – the state with the second largest Hispanic population in the nation.

In response to the decision, Andrea Nill Sanchez, Executive Director of Latinos for a Fair Judiciary provided the following statement:

“While it’s true that today’s Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade is an assault on the health and freedom of every woman in this country, as is often the case, Latinas and women of color will bear the unfortunate brunt of this backwards ruling. We join the three dissenting Justices in mourning the loss of our reproductive rights and are outraged at the threat it poses to our personal and economic mobility. Today, we are reminded once again just how these decisions from the federal court system can have life and death consequences, and why our fight for equal justice and representation is now more important than ever.”

“As Latinas, many of us and our ancestors emigrated to the U.S. to escape hostile governments that have long treated women as second-class citizens — unable to exercise basic reproductive    freedoms and other rights while facing the constant threat of domestic and gender-based violence. Yet, just as several of those countries in Latin America and across the world have expanded reproductive rights, today the U.S. Supreme Court took our nation several steps backwards by overturning Roe v. Wade.”

“Make no mistake about it, the attack on a woman's right to choose isn't about the sanctity of life — it's an ugly exercise of machismo. If the right-wing movement was really pro-life, it wouldn't oppose providing women with paid family leave, affordable childcare, health care access, breastfeeding rights, or even measures addressing the formula shortage so we can feed our babies. We wouldn’t see most ‘pro-life’ Republicans fighting minimal gun restrictions in response to a mass shooting in an elementary school.”

“With a majority of Latinos believing abortion should be legal in all or most cases, Latinos for a Fair Judiciary and our partners will not stand idly by as anti-democratic courts strip away our rights and choose politics over settled legal precedent. The end of Roe v. Wade deepens our commitment to raising awareness within our community around the impact courts have. The reprehensible decision is a case in point for why we need a more diverse and representative federal judiciary that reflects the will of the people.”
